Inclined well-pump housings in the Mw7.0 April 16th, 2016 Kumamoto EQ

Legend

Not a small number of RC housings for pumping facilities for wells were found tilted near Akita clean water distribution field. The steel casing of each well embedded about 170 to 200 m deep in the ground goes straight up to its housing, and is clamped to the floor of the housing eccentrically off its exact center. Meanwhile four corner columns of the housing are supported by 20 m long PC piles, which were dragged down by the uppermost organic soil. Since the 170 to 200m long steel casing of the well is eccentrically strutting the housing, the housing is considered to have tilted towards the farthest corner of it. Therefore, tilts of RC housings of pumps for clean water wells may have been a reflection of volume loss associated with deformation buildups deep inside aquifers.
The Google Earth tour flying about 650 m over the flat land along Kiyama River provides you with locations of the inclined well-pump housings.
